WAMO Studio Architects | WHERE ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE, AND LIVING BECOME ONE

Set within the rolling vineyards and oak-studded landscape of Northern California wine country near the city of Kenwood, this residence is conceived as a quiet retreat deeply connected to its environment. Designed by WAMO Studio Architects, the project explores the intersection of luxurious living, sustainable architecture, and contemporary craftsmanship through a restrained architectural language of monolithic concrete forms, filtered light, reflecting pools, and carefully framed views of the surrounding vineyards.

The architecture is organized as a series of interconnected courtyards and sheltered outdoor rooms that dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior living. Large overhangs, recessed glazing, thermal mass walls, and passive shading strategies work together to create a highly energy-efficient home responsive to the Mediterranean climate of Sonoma County. The residence embraces a philosophy of low-impact luxury — where sustainability is not an aesthetic addition, but an integral part of the architectural experience.

Water plays a central role throughout the project. Reflecting pools, courtyards, and landscape terraces temper the microclimate while reinforcing a sense of calm and stillness. Perforated concrete screen walls filter sunlight and provide privacy while maintaining visual permeability to the surrounding landscape. Every architectural gesture is carefully calibrated to enhance natural light, cross ventilation, and seasonal connection to the site.

The interiors, designed entirely by WAMO Studio under the direction of Carol Ware, continue the architectural narrative through a warm and restrained material palette of natural stone, wood, soft textiles, and custom furnishings. The interior spaces are intentionally quiet and tactile, allowing texture, light, and proportion to define the atmosphere. Furnishings were selected and designed to create a sense of understated luxury — refined yet deeply comfortable — reinforcing the home’s relationship to the landscape and slower rhythms of wine country living.

All exterior hardscaping and landscape integration were also designed by our studio, creating a seamless dialogue between architecture, water, gardens, terraces, and vineyard edges. Pathways, outdoor gathering spaces, retaining elements, and reflecting basins were carefully composed as extensions of the architecture itself, blurring distinctions between building and landscape.

The result is a residence that feels both monumental and serene — a contemporary sanctuary rooted in sustainability, craftsmanship, and the timeless beauty of Northern California wine country.
